Lemon verbena is a South American shrub that is cultivated in other warm regions as an ornamental and culinary herb. Its species name is a reference to the leaves, which appear on the stem in whorls of three. The genus name of this plant is believed to be an honor to (and an adaptation of) the 18th century Queen consort of Spain, Maria Luisa. Before the commercial production of lemongrass, lemon verbena provided flavor and fragrance to cosmetics and perfumes, albeit at a higher cost. One particular benefit of using lemon verbena in potpourri and other crafts is that the herb retains its fragrance for a long time.
